Bulk Operations in BBMO Playlist Manager

A few things I’m struggling with using the playlist manager in BBMO:

  • The 128 song limit is short. Could it be expanded to 512 or 1024?

  • Need the ability to move/delete groups of songs, e.g., something like Spotify’s Shift-Click functionality would be amazing.

  • In the interim, a workaround for these issues I think would be to map song IDs to human-readable names, e.g., a way to determine that 149E1CAF/7C50F816.BBS is actually “Lean on Me” (Bill Withers). How about a metadata file containing the song name in the filename next to the .BBS file? For example:

    149E1CAF/7C50F816.BBS
    149E1CAF/7C50F816_Lean_On_Me.dat

Then we could possibly move things around more easily in a text editor.

One of the reasons for the 128 song limit in folders is tied to the use of MIDI song IDs (see p122 of the BBMO User Manual). That’s probably not to say that it couldn’t be expanded >128 songs, it just means that anything beyond 128 songs would no longer allow easy song selection by programs such as OnSong for songs 129-1024.

Shameless copy and paste from Gemini regarding Onsong and MIDI 1.0’s 128 song ID limit:

How OnSong expands past 128 songs

To control thousands of items despite the 128-value limit, MIDI uses a system akin to a filing cabinet:

  1. The Folders (Banks): MIDI utilizes MSB (Most Significant Byte) and LSB (Least Significant Byte) messages. Each of these also holds 128 values.
  2. The Pages (Program Changes): This is the 0–127 song value you are referring to.

By multiplying them together (128 × 128 × 128), the MIDI 1.0 protocol can actually index over 2 million unique locations.

I don’t know MIDI well enough to know if the above is workable, but it seems to make sense.

that is indeed how MIDI works. BUT you will still be restricted to 127 (midi really goes from 0-127, but most coders - not just at SS, but everywhere - fudge this with code to make it more"humanly pleasing" to go 1-128) songs per bank.
