If you are doing “common songs” - that is, songs that are in common time signatures and don’t change signatures within a song, I have never found a need to “create” anything using midi software. I can find a drum pattern(s) within the BB pedal that will work in virtually any song. I agree that many of the fills and patterns are far more complicated than anything you would normally hear in a typical pop/rock/country song. But you can modify any them using BB manager if you feel the need.
I find it helpful to have some additional drum sets. I use the Ludwig set, the Latin set, and the phil collins style set for quite a few songs. But I rely on the Rock, Standard, and Brushes sets for the majority of songs.
