5.3.4 'RPO: play' stops overdubbing prematurely in quantized mode

Settings: 6x6, quantized, everything set to End Of Measure where possible.

Procedure: I record 2 bars of audio to track 1 in a blank 4/4 song. During bar 2 I send two RPO messages (cc41:100) to cue overdub.

I then overdub audio for 2 bars. On beat 3 of bar 2 I send one RPO message to cue playback. (Audio input continues until the end of the bar.)

Result: On each playback of the resulting 2-bar loop, the overdub goes silent on beat 3 of bar 2, and the waveform display shows that the overdubbing stopped from that point forward.

I’ve done this repeatedly with the same outcome each time. To be honest, I’ve never used overdub much so I could be making a rookie mistake. I expected the overdub-to-playback transition to be quantized to the measure, but maybe it never worked that way. I don’t intend to record a video, but maybe other people can corroborate my experience or tell me where I went wrong.

Hey there,

This is not a bug, overdubbing is always instant when controlling a single track in a continuous part, you cannot set an overdub to finish at the end of a bar/loop unless you start a new recording to an empty track, switch parts, or stop the loop while the overdub is being recorded.

The action (starting new recording/switching parts/stopping) needs to be set to happen at the end of loop or next measure to make this workaround happen.

Thank you for reporting, if you would like to make a feature request to somehow support this, you can do so in the feature request category

Thanks Brennan, TIL.

I assume that there are reasons why this would be or difficult or undesirable to implement. I’m curious as to what they are, but I won’t add another feature request to the pile.

Edit: On reflection, I can see why there isn’t much need for a cued transition from overdubbing to playback at EOM/EOL. I found the lack of this feature surprising because I thought it meant that the cessation of overdubbing could not be cued in general. But as you say, it can be cued by a track change command etc.
