BB2 MIDI Clock Output When Not Playing

Hi there. I’m curious if there’s a setting that allows the Beat Buddy 2 to output MIDI beat clock when not playing. I’m having an issue where my delays are trying to catch up to the clock change when I start the beat buddy. This happens even when I set the internal clock on the delay to the BPM of the BB2 track. I’d love for there to be a way that my delays can lock to the BB2 in park so there’s no pitch warble on the delays as they ramp up or down to speed when I hit play. My current setup is, I have the BB2 as the MIDI master feeding my HX stomp which feeds the clock to all my FX. Let me know if this isn’t making sense. Thanks!

Hello,

By default, the BeatBuddy 2 should work as expected, with MIDI - MIDI OUT - MIDI Sync set to Always On, meaning it sends the MIDI clock even when stopped.

Please try restoring the default settings on the BeatBuddy 2. If the issue persists, please send us an email at support@singularsound.com so we can assist you further.

Hi cbrennanfoster!

In addition to what DanielSingularSound has said…
I think your issue lies in Settings/MIDI OUT/Sync/Stop. Select “Disable” there.

Otherwise, the BB2 sends a MIDI Stop command to the HX Stomp, causing the blue light to turn red; this results in a loss of synchronization as it reverts to the preset’s original tempo.

Consequently, it doesn’t re-sync until the track starts playing, which causes those warbling artifacts in the delay effects during re-synchronization.

However, if you disable the MIDI Stop command on the BB2, you won’t have that problem anymore.

The only issue with the solution I mentioned before is that the Aeros no longer stops in sync with the BB2; it has to be stopped manually.

I don’t know of a solution that allows both the HX Stomp to maintain tempo sync (which requires disabling the MIDI Stop message on the BB2) while also having the Aeros stop automatically (which requires enabling MIDI Stop on the BB2).

So, we have a real dilemma here.

My MIDI chain is BB2 > Aeros > HX Stomp XL, by the way.

Thanks so much for the detailed info, Ed! Your solution worked great for me except for the Aeros not stopping as you mentioned. Appreciate it!

I’m glad I could help, mate.

I think the only solution for us would be for the guys at Singular Sound to implement a filter for the MIDI THRU on the Aeros, so it could receive the MIDI Stop message without passing it on through the MIDI OUT.

Thank you for your help, Ed! Much appreciated!

Regarding filtering the MIDI OUT message from the Aeros, you can go to Settings > MIDI > MIDI OUT > Stop and select Disable.

Hi Daniel!

Unfortunately, that setting on the Aeros only applies to the STOP message it sends itself. In other words, it does not filter the message coming from the BB2 that is propagated via MIDI-THRU; that message is passed through regardless.

Thank you for checking!

In this case, please go to Settings > MIDI > MIDI In, then click Filter at the top. There, you’ll have the option to filter the MIDI input, including STOP (SysEx) and custom CC messages.

I really appreciate your interest, Daniel.

I’ve run some tests with those filters, and the truth is, they don’t seem to have any effect.

I ran these tests consecutively to observe the effect:

1- Settings > MIDI > MIDI IN / FILTER > STOP (SYSEX) > ON

Result: Both the Aeros and the HX Stomp continue to receive the Stop message (obviously, the HX Stomp loses sync here).

2- Settings > MIDI > MIDI IN / FILTER > START (SYSEX) > ON

Result: Both the Aeros and the HX Stomp continue to receive the START message.

3- Settings > MIDI > MIDI IN / FILTER > MIDI CLOCK > ON

Result: Both the Aeros and the HX Stomp continue to receive the MIDI CLOCK and sync the tempo correctly when I change songs on the BB2.

In conclusion, those filters don’t seem to have any effect on MIDI IN. Are you sure they are working?

In any case, I assume that since they are MIDI IN filters —even if they *did* work— they would prevent the Aeros from receiving the MIDI Stop as well, right?

That’s why I said we would need MIDI THRU filters, meaning the Aeros would receive the MIDI STOP message but wouldn’t pass it on to the HX Stomp.
