Bug: Plugging in power sends a sharp square wave / digital distortion out the phones jack

I instead expect a piece of expensive gear (> $200) to not emit transients or noise like that which could damage audio devices.

That is not the case here. If you would like to avoid this happening in the future, you could turn down the headphones all the way/ don’t plug them in until after you have turned the device on.
