Hi all
I was wondering if anyone has connected a groovebox like a roland 101 or novation circuit to change or enhance the drum tones or play the rythm as a synth using a groovebox. I essentially want to use cutoff, filter and delay and reverb. Also be able to mute and unmute indevidual drum parts. Any advice would be great
also the use of faders
I have used HX Stomp to modify BB sound with those effects ![]()
This I’m not sure I follow, but if you mean to disable e.g. bass drum or snare etc then that would mean taking the midi notes from BB and generating the sound elsewhere where you have control over all those things ![]()
This should be possible using the BB plugin
Or if you map the midi notes to match the tool you would be using
But I don’t have experience of this (yet) ![]()
Edit:
For some reason I feel like I’m misunderstanding what you want to do ![]()
If you want to use BB notes to trigger these effects then just be aware that BB doesn’t support all the note details you might need
But this is an area where I’m not an expert ![]()
Hi and thanks i am using the Boss me 50 outputting the raw beat buddy sound into the me 50 input. I guess you are doing that with the hx edit.
in terms of being able to add and take away effects to the various drum parts, snare, bass, high hat, thats what I mean, and ideally adding faders to thos beat buddy drum parts so I can change the drum pattern to just a boom beat on the bass by pulling the snare, high hat down etc…, but I dont know how to map them. Do I need a midi thru and what other tech would I need.
here is an interesting video on connecting the beat buddy to a groove box
so the chain might be
Beat Buddy midi out > midi thru > mapped fader and a groove box?
Should add I dont know if I want to go down the computer software route as during performance it might be dependent on wifi data, otherwise bb plugin with logic pro or Ableton amd map faders and effects cc to an Akai AKAI Professional MIDImix - USB MIDI Controller Mixer with Assignable Faders & Master Fader, 24 Knobs and 16 Buttons, 1 to 1 Mapping With Ableton Live: Amazon.co.uk: Musical Instruments & DJ
Alright, to me it sounds like you kind of know what you want to achieve but not sure how to reach it ![]()
So here are couple questions that can help you:
- Do you want to use the BB drum sounds or
- do you just want to trigger stuff with BB?
In the video he is just triggering stuff with BB
Or maybe also using BB sounds, I’m not quite sure ![]()
The difference between options 1 and 2 is that:
- You can only separate BB instruments based on panning and frequency
not a complete separation - The limitations here are the limitations of your other system that you will be triggering

So by triggering you can control each instrument and effect separately. The only limitation is basically the number of midi notes (128) which each can be programmed to trigger different things
And as I said earlier the contents of each note (BB utilizes only some features of a midi note)
I think the BB drums are ok but sound flat compared to say a logic pro kit. I think you are right as I could not find any cc dedicated to the Beat Buddy drum parts on beat buddy midi command list, but I could have scrolled past it. The advantage of using a groovebox connected to the beat buddy is that the you can assign a saw synth to read the beat buddy notes and you have an instrument that you can use that is in time with the beat buddy drum sound, and bu applying cutoff, etc…you can enhance the track to make everything sound more contemporary
I also have the beat buddy connected to an Aeros looper so a midi thru box with 1 in and 3 outs is essential to keep consistant tempo
i think after connecting the Boss ME 50 as an audio source filter, the sound was just not clean enough, hence midi to groove box
