Extract BPM from Meta File on Computer

Hi there,

I posted about this in Feature Requests but I was a little confused by the response. Supposedly the time sig and BPM can be found in the meta file, but the meta files show up for me as text files with track names, song notes, and lots of gibberish. Does anyone know how to find/extract the bpm from the meta file once its on your computer? Is there some software that I should be using to do this? I use Reaper as my DAW.

This is how the meta file shows up for me…

  • Duplicate the song

  • Change the BPM (or time sig; prefer one change at a time)

  • Compare the two files in some hex editor

  • Remember the offset/location or delimiter for that value change.

  • Look at the number and try to understand the format. There might be multiple numbers, some swaps of high and low bytes, etc.

  • Repeat

  • Build the tool or ask some geek to write a tool that finds the BPM, time sig based upon the info gleaned from above.

So in other words…the BPM and time sig are not legible in the meta file for the average user…
