Follow up: When using Helix as midi control for Beatbuddy 2, Helix triggers BB2 to start when changing presets

I started this conversation on an old thread, but I wanted to start a new thread to document my experience and the work around I’ve come up with for anyone else who may be experiencing this issue.

This seems to be an issue with how the Helix sends MIDI commands, and how the Bestbuddy interprets a 0 command, specifically with the “transition” midi command.

The issue was that when I changed presets on the Helix it was causing the BB2 to start the Intro. I went through all the midi in cc commands on the BeatBuddy and discovered that when I turned off CC: Transition, the problem stopped. I tried other similar commands like CC: Intro, but only disabling CC: Transition worked. I re-enabled it and deleted the Next/Previous Transition commands in the preset and the issue ceased. So that was the problem.

The work around/s:

I created a Master Control CC command to be able to transition to the next part from the Helix. The same way it works on the pedal. But to be able to transition to the previous part I had to do one of two things.

I set a CC MIDI (not toggle, although you can use toggle, it’s just not necessary) CC: 113 Value 116. There can not be a Value 0 or the problem will persist. So if you use CC Toggle you must set Dim & Lit both to 126.

However, in doing this the transition to the previous part never ends, therefore you must then tap the master control switch to send a 0 command, which will end the transition and successfully transition to the previous part. It’s tedious but if the two buttons are right next to each other, it’s not that bad.

Alternatively, you could change the pause button on the pedal itself to transition to the previous part, and if you still want to be able to pause, you can create a pause command on the Helix. I’m testing them both out to see which works for me.

Hopefully this will help other people who want to use the Helix as a midi controller for their Beatbuddy. It seems for a true fix to happen either Line 6 or singular Sound, or both will have to work together to figure out a solution.

PS: I tried all of the following first, as well as some other suggestions. So many that I don’t remember them all. But I think exhausted all possible solutions first:

  • Global PC Send = OFF

  • Snapshot PC Send = OFF

  • MIDI Clock = OFF

  • MIDI Thru = OFF

  • No Command Center instant commands

  • No loops, only DIN Out to BeatBuddy

  • Beat Buddy midi in Sync/Start/Stop all disengaged

  • And more…
