I just received word of Robert Hunter’s death. Over these past few weeks, working on these songs, I have grown to appreciate the genius, talent and poeticism of his lyrics. He was one of the very few greats. I will continue on with my project, but this is a very sad day for me.
Phil, I’m sure you know that Robert Hunter’s Great, Great grandfather was the romantic poet, Robert Burns. Just a side note for all the aspiring lyricists who are reading this: Robert Burns had over 12 children by different mothers. I guess that says something about being a romantic poet. Robert Hunter’s given name was also Robert Burns. He changed it somewhere along the line. He was truly one of the greats. The Grateful Dead considered him a non-performing member of the Dead.
I whole heartedly agree Phil. Robert Hunter’s genius will be missed and revered forever. Thank you Phil for making the Grateful Dead songs with his lyrics available to play on Beatbuddy. I play them everyday.
RIP Robert Hunter
