Initial impressions of the BeatBuddy 2

I would reassign rack 2 to 48, rack 1 to 45 and floor to 43. That still leaves you short the 50 tom. What I do those instances is get the samples from the rack 2 and, in a Daw pitch shift them up 2 semitones. Then use those to create a new rack 3 tom at 50. Not exactly ideal, but it could be a good work around for you.

Those are good ideas, Phil. and I’ll implement them if I decide to keep the Beatbuddy 2. I feel the kit size alone gives it a whole different level of potential. However, I’ve never had anyone complain that my current drums on the BB1 sound ā€œfakeā€. My biggest complaint is that BB2 is marketed touting HD kits but you can’t even play the default song library with those HD kits. There should have been at least ONE kit that was mapped identically but with more/better (mo bettah) samples…that would have also been a nice way to A/B compare an HD kit to a non-HD. Singular seems to be relying on a lot of user knowledge to make things work for an out of the box feature they are promoting. As great as the BB1 has been, this experience (so far) with BB2 has been disappointing.

–Thank you as always for your support and help.

Has anyone done a BB2 comparison of the standard drums vs HD drum sets through a PA? I might see HD drums useful when recording, but a bit skeptical that played through a PA in a live setting might be noticeably ā€˜better’ than a standard drum kit.

Funny you ask that because my bass player and I just ran about an hours worth of sampling back and forth. I would say it’s not an easy A/B comparison because Modern Custom and Custom Standard and Soul Jazz do not equate equally to say Rock or Standard on BB1. With that said, running Rock or Standard compared to Modern Custom or Custom Standard at similar volumes on similar songs (we used Rock 8) the HD kits sounded better. However, that difference in sound quality was reduced when I went to the Goran custom kit Vintage Standard. Ideally there would be an HD rock Kit that we could match and compare with the old Rock kit. My guess is that it would sound better though, just more data available for the samples. And the new kits will allow 400+MB instead of 100…the HD kits that come with the pedal are only using about 2-300-ish so plenty of room for massive, fully sampled kits and even other instruments.

In spite of all that, there are other problems…for instance my FS-7 Boss Footswitch that I’ve been using for years with no problems on BB1 will not detect or work on BB2. As it is one of the most popular and common footswitches it makes me wonder if SS is only wanting us to use their proprietary models, which would be a bummer since I already have money invested in the Boss Footswitches. ** Update: the FS-7 Footswitch will work if powered and polarity set to II, and momentary switch chosen **

I have built a Modern Custom Legacy kit now, with original mapping and some missing pieces from other kits. Thanks for the advice Phil. I think this will work and I’ll use it for some gig practice and see if it’s overall worth the extra investment. You haven’t made any multi-sample bass kits have you by chance? It might be cool to upgrade the Rock & Rick bass samples with a few other sample for more realism.

I don’t have a BB2, so I’m still using single samples for non-drums.

If I had the funds I would buy you one sir…you (and @persist ) have done and continue to do so much for the Beatbuddy community. I wouldn’t even be using it in a regular gigging fashion if it wasn’t for y’all.
