Initial impressions of the BeatBuddy 2

Singular Sound has acted on much of the feedback users have provided on the original BeatBuddy (BB) pedal and integrated that in to the new BeatBuddy 2 (BB2). Some examples:

  1. The BB2 now has an on/off switch
  2. When inserted in the BB2, the SD card is now recessed so that it doesn’t stick out
  3. MIDI ports instead of a PS/2 connector

A couple of users expressed concern about the distance between the BB2 buttons not being wide enough. If you are able to successfully use the Singular Sound remote foot switch, you shouldn’t have any trouble as the distance between the inner edges of those two buttons is 4.6 centimeters. The distance between the inner edges of the BB2 pedal buttons is 5.5 centimeters. The distance between the inner edges of the SuperSwitch is 5.6 centimeters.

To all that have gotten delivery on the BB2 and previously owned BB1!…

Please tell us from a sound quality perspective, is there a big noticeable difference that’s well worth the upgrade? I, like probably many, am intrigued but on the fence and need the feedback to help me pull the trigger.

…and worth the arduous fire drill of spending the upgrade cost, switching over, selling BB1 on Reverb at a loss, etc, etc. Thanks

I just posted a pic to the show off your board thread. I just hooked mine up to a bose pro 32 with sub 2 and it sounds like magic. I got to my gig early to get extra time with the new unit and am really impressed with the kits. Have not gotten to the boutique stuff yet. I have a show tonight and tomorrow and will report more after more reps.

I don’t believe they’ve changed anything from a sound quality perspective. They have increased the size of the drumsets to have more samples which gives more variation.

I haven’t received the new drums yet to see what they sound like. I emailed support to see when we’ll get it.

The BeatBuddy 2 default content contains 3 new HD kits, it can be redownloaded from our website in the support page if you do not have them for any reason

What are the file names for the 3 HD sets in the new default content? Can I just copy those files into my existing project on my SD card (without copy the entire default content)?

You could open the default content using BBMO beta, export the 3 HD kits, and then import them into your existing project using BBMO beta

Where can we download the default content?

Good question! I have asked David to please add it to the BeatBuddy 2 announcement page, thank you for your patience

Thanks! I found it at the bottom of the BB2 product page.

I really like the option off starting with or without intros.

I received mine. I dont hear anything with the HD drumsets Ive Listened to that makes me say OHHHH thats different. However, I HAVENT COMPARED THESE DRUMSETS TO AN sd VERSION. I do hear a difference in sound quality from playing included drumsets in bbmo ver 1 and bbmo ver2 suprisingly. More Clarity and punch. I dont see anything in the specs. This could be a chipset thing or gain staging somehow. All that aside, The differences in usability of the pedal are enormous, Display and screen information is much more usable and evident. even bigger here would be better. Huge improvement. Footswitches and superswitch. massive improvement. Spacing and ease of finding the right switch with your foot, Priceless! Ability to customize to your liking ! Please consider superswitch to trigger midi command for Aeros so that BB Aeros commands can be combined in superswitch. Also, Consider firmware to allow more Storage on sd cards. With more HD drumsets, custom drumsets, lots of songs, eventually 32gb wont work and have already started to become more difficult to find than larger cards. Overall, This is a great product for which there is nothing else in competition.

I received my BB2 preorder megapack today after 23 days. But at least it also included the two Cablis, so I don’t have to wait for any more packages. I didn’t have to pay any additional fees or taxes, which was great.

My first impression of the design and materials of the BB2 and SuperSwitch has been very good. It was also my first time using gold footswitches, since my Aeros is silver.

What I didn’t like so much is that the screen is too recessed (a few millimeters away from the surface), which makes it impossible to read the text at the bottom if you place it on a desk at a certain distance from the edge.

As for the three new HD kits, I thought I heard a noticeable imbalance in the volume of some instruments (bass drum too loud on the Soul Jazz Kit, toms too present in others, etc), so I agree with the suggestion to request the inclusion of a MIDI note mixer to be able to adjust this without having to resort to the editor. At least for the most important instruments in the drum kit (bass drum, snare, toms, hi-hat, cymbals, etc.).

Overall, I have a good initial impression, although there are currently few noticeable differences compared to the original BB. In this sense, I am sorry to say that BB2 currently feels more like an update or rehousing of the same product than a new generation arriving 10 years later.

Of course, we can expect new features to be added over time (we haven’t even heard all the HD kits yet), but the BB2’s starting point in terms of functionality and MIDI implementation is, as of today, essentially the same as the BB1, beyond the promised autopilot.

Thank you I believe that answers my question.

One thing that I noticed right away is that the HD kits do not have the same midi mapping for generic and common drum parts such as Tom 4, 3, 2, & 1. I have a lot of songs I’ve made that use the midi spots 43, 45, 48, & 50, but since those are not all in in any of the new HD kits, I would have to rebuild all of my songs that have pretty basic drum fills–which is 99% of them. OR just keep using basic rock or standard or vintage kits that ARE not HD and thus nullifying my primary reason for upgrading. I would think they would have least included the Default Standard or Rock kits in an HD mode, but nope…just a few HD kits with mapping that doesn’t match my 100s of songs. I’m actually considering returning and the only thing slowing me down from that at the moment is I DO see potential in the larger kit sizes–right now they have little use for me.

What is mapped at 43, 45, 48 and 50 in the HD kits? Are the toms mapped somewhere else?

Let me send you a screenshot…but the gist is what is in a normal drum tab that any student or programmer would use is not there. Seems like a bad oversight. The 400MB size though could be good if I wanted to create one awesome kit for all my songs with multiple bass samples on OPBs…just not sure if my use case needs that.

Attached is “standard custom” as you can see there are not Toms in 48 or 50. They have some other drum parts, which is great, but won’t match any of their existing default songs or my DOPs, OPBs, or custom builds. On this one 43 and 45 are Tom 1 and Tom 2, but in Rock for instance those are Tom 4 and Tom 5….you can see a Floor Tom on 41, but that’s not a midi position for which I normally have something programmed, or at least not a Tom. The second screen shot is Modern Custom HD, similar problem. Also, notice no handclaps if you use them.
