Midi clock keeps playing while stopped

I want to disable midi clock when the BB is not playing so I have BB midi sync set at “while playing”. However clock is still getting sent, I think because midi merge is on in the BB. Without that, I can’t send any midi info to next device.

I’m sending clock to the beat buddy (from a line 6 Helix passing through a Morningstar MC8) and everything sees clock correctly. Then I have the BB midi sync setting at “while playing” which should only send clock while the drums are playing. However I have midi output merge enabled so that it sends incoming clock and beat buddy start stop commands to the next device (a Boomerang III).

With the midi merge on and no drums playing, it still sends clock through even though I have BB sync set to “while playing” on. If I turn “merge” off, it doesn’t pass any clock to the next device. I think the issue is the BB is not generating the clock, my Helix is. So it’s still passing clock through via midi merge.

I tried a bunch of midi settings in the BB, but can’t get the clock to mute while BB is stopped.

When I generated clock with the BB prior, this worked normally. I’m trying to use the Helix tap tempo button instead of using a dedicated tempo button for the BB…

It might be helpful to include which version of the BeatBuddy (BB) firmware you are using.

Firmware 4.1.6

If it’s just the tap tempo then you can send tap tempo messages for BB from your Helix  I believe this should fix your problems

(I’m assuming one can disable midi clock from Helix out)

Another option would be to use the BB main pedal for tap tempo, but this requires changing BB from press mode to release mode  (more in BB manual)

So you have tested if BB is in midi out only mode, right :upside_down_face:
