My OnSong setup with BeatBuddy

OK. One more time. You seem to have an idea of what you need to do, but you’re not letting the instructions get through to you. So these will be explicit and repetitive. You need to create the MIDI command in OnSong, using this number scheme:

MIDI: MSB.LSB:Song number. MSB is how many times to add 128 to the folder number. In my case its zero, because I have less than 128 folders. I’ve been told there is a BB limit of 100, but I have not test that. LSB is the position of your folder on your Beat Buddy minus 1. So, in this case, the song is in the second folder in my Beat Buddy. Song number is the song’s position within that folder, also minus 1. This song, is the first song in my second folder. Again the command is "MIDI: [one space after the colon]MSB[this will be zero].LSB[this is the folder position on the BB minus 1]:song number[song position minus 1]. There is a space after the first colon, no space after the period, and no space after the second colon.

Here is the top of my folder list in Beat Buddy Manager:

IMPORTANT: Once I assigned MIDI numbers, I can’t move folders around anymore, or the numbers wont work. Let’s just look at the first 3 Folder here. Phil’s Old Loose-Leaf Songbook is my first folder. It gets an MSB of 0, and since its the first folder, the LSB is also 0. MIDI counts from 0 to 127.

Here is a partial list of the songs in the first folder:
[ATTACH=full]7101[/ATTACH]

My Blank Song is first. So, it’s song position value is 0. 3AM is 2nd; it’s song position value is 1. Allison is third, it’s song position is 2.

So, the midi commands in OnSong for these 3 songs would be:
For Blank - MIDI: 0.0:0
3 AM - MIDI: 0.0:1
Allison - MIDI 0.0:2

Bus Stop is twelfth on the list. It’s command is MIDI: 0.0:11

Again, once I assign these values in OnSong, I cannot move the folders. I also cannot add songs anywhere above songs that have already been assigned values. I could add songs to the bottom of the list in the folder.

Getting back to the folders. Blues would have MSB and LSB of 0 and 1. So, it’s MIDI commands look like this:

MIDI: 0.1:[Song position number]

For Blues 2, it’s MIDI: 0.2:[Song position number]

As to this idea:

I set up my set list in OnSong (that has been assigned MIDI numbers) and create a folder in BeatBuddy Manager as “Set List” with the same songs listed and this thing should work?

The beauty of OnSong is that as long as the numbers are in place for the songs, you do not need to create a separate set list on BB. You create the set list within OnSong, and it can pull from any of your BB folders. I can have a set list created in OnSong that pulls some songs from Phil’s Old Loose-Leaf Songbook, some from Blues 2, some from 80’s Rock and Pop K-R, etc.

Your final question:

My next question is this…does the set list in Beatbuddy have to have MIDI for each song as well? Thank you for helping me!!

Answer: A - Do not make a set list in Beat Buddy. B - there is no where to put MIDI in your song is Beat Buddy. We had a firmware that was attempting to do this, but Singular did away with that idea, at least temporarily. Maybe, in the future, we will be able to do that, at which time we would no longer be locked into keeping our songs stuck in the order we numbered them. However, for now, that is the way we have to do things to get OnSong to find songs and pull them up.

Phil, First I need to insert my SD card in my computer and view the order in which the folders came arranged; so that I know how to assign MIDI to my OnSong songs for a given set. I think I have MIDI down now! Thanks! Sorry for riding the short bus! LOL! You’re the best teacher!

I think you’re just about ready for the big bus. Yup, you gotta get the songs in there first. If you could actually see my OnSong, you’d find that I only have values for my Blues folder entered, so far. That’s because it has the full 99 songs. On my other folders, I had been holding off doing them, until I had everything on the site downloaded. Well, that changes, everyday, so I finally decided I am just going to keep my folders as is, and start adding date-based folders, hence the new October 2017 folder. Also, I haven’t been evaluating every song for its quality, which I will do as I start to add chord sheets to OnSong, and add the MIDI numbers to those chord sheets.

You might also notice that when I upload a song, I usually include a plain text chord sheet. I do this for OnSong users, as it should provide a better source for the chord sheet than using some proprietary format like docx, or even pdf. Although OnSong can use pdf files; it cannot be used to edit them.

OnSong has a really great video on Advanced Topics with the Beat Buddy, and it explains how to set up pdf files for use in OnSong, and a whole lot more.

Are these files still in Dropbox? I’ve tried opening them on my MacBook and had no luck. The OnSong worked but not the drum folders or go to beats count in. Any suggestions on how I might load this in?

The files are still in Dropbox. You might want so spend some more time reading up on the BeatBuddy Manager. Do not try to open BB files with the Mac OS. The files with pbf and drm extensions are to be imported using the BBM as folders and drum sets, respectively.

Do you find any latency when running the Moore Tender Octaver through the Duo? I have a new ipad pro and I bought this and there is a noticeable latency that interferes with my playing as compared to testing it without the duo. W/out the duo sounds great? Just curious.

I also wrote Quantiloop and asked for a split screen option but to no avail.

Just curious and sorry for jumping in here emacnevin, but do you have the octaver at the front of your chain?

Yes I had tried it going in before the duo midi interface input so I could record the “guitar bass” in quantiloop.

Hello, BB Enthusiasts
This might just be the longest thread in history. How long ago was this first post? I think a couple of years, now yes? Thank you ruairiau and the many others who have contributed to this body of knowledge. This may have been covered in one of the many, many posts, so I apologize if I am asking a question that has been answered.

QUESTION: Is is possible to connect iPad #2 without using the PUC+? I would like to eliminate Bluetooth from the chain.

I am using the iRig Duo successfully with OnSong to send MIDI commands to both BB and Quantiloop. No issues here.
I am running two iPads:

  1. iPad Pro 12.9" for OnSong charts and to send the MIDI commands
  2. New iPad 9.7 to run Quantiloop and XAir app.

My current configuration requires me to use the PUC+ from iPad #1 because of my understanding of the cabling limitations, primary gender and length. I did purchase a USB female to 3.5mm cable to utilize the iRig MIDI Out to run to iPad #2 only to realize iRig MIDI In/Outs are 2.5mm. I am stuck with PUC+ for now unless someone has a better idea.

QUESTION: Is is possible to connect iPad #2 without using the PUC+? I would like to eliminate Bluetooth from the chain.

CHAIN:
iPad # 1 > PUC+ > BB MIDI In > BB MIDI Out > iRig Duo MIDI In > iRig MIDI Din to USB > USB to Lightning Adapter > iPad #2.

BLUETOOT FOOTSWITCH: (I have never seen anyone mention this switch in the forum. Works great!)
AirTurn AirStomp 6 > Bluetooth to iPad #1: Configured in OnSong to send MIDI commands using the Gear features for multiple switch configurations: Below are a couple of examples. I configure the bottom-left corner of OnSong to toggle between gears.

Configured Quantiloop with Single Phase so track do not play simultaneously .
Gear 1: (Recording)
Switch 1 - 4 configured to record/start/stop Quantiloop tracks
Switch 5: enable/disable Dub on current track
Switch 6: Erase current track

Gear 2: (Live)
Switch 1 - 4 configured to record/start/stop Quantiloop tracks
Switch 5: enable/disable Dub
Switch 6: Stop BB

@CFMD28
Maybe I’m missing something. Why not just use a cheap $10 USB MIDI cable from iPad#1 to the beatbuddy?

CHAIN:
iPad # 1 > USB MIDI OUT > BB MIDI In > BB MIDI Out > iRig Duo MIDI In > iRig MIDI Din to USB > USB to Lightning Adapter > iPad #2.

I don’t know of any iPad version that had a USB port. The originals had the 30pin? connector and the new one have a lightning connector.

Hi, ruairiau
I thought I needed a MIDI controller as the first device in the chain after iPad #1. I guess it’s because I’ve always had the PUC+ as the next device in the chain that I thought it had to be a MIDI controller

Correct. I have a Lightning to USB adapter. ruairiau calls them camera adapters. I am actually using Apple branded USB 3.0 adapter because it has a USB and a lightening port so that you can continue to charge it while in use.

Hi CFMD28
Apple call the USB adapter a CCK (Camera Connection Kit). Let me clarify what I mean above…

When I say…
iPad # 1 > USB MIDI OUT > BB MIDI In >

I mean…
iPad # 1 > CCK (*1) > USB MIDI cable (*2) >BB MIDI In >

  1. This is the USB socket that plags into the lightning adapter. Make sure to get the new version which also allows simultaneous power.
  2. Cheap MIDI USB cables are easily available on ebay for under $10. https://www.alltech.com.au/en/audio-headphones/497-usb-interface-to-midi-converter-adapter-cable-music-keyboard.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjwgMnYBRDRARIsANC2dfk0vHIzlNX4CgU2abRq7AfmSPEG3VzjpNCsuR8es-oyJbkN0hjvTN8aAqWCEALw_wcB

Thanks. That clears that up. Even with the cost of the camera connection kit, that’s a much cheaper alternative than the addition of another iRig.

Hi Phil

Happy new year. I finally have my onsong connecting to the beat buddy. My burning question is can I still use my infinity looper connected to the beat buddy or is that option gone in the case of onsong ? The blue tooth connects to the beat buddy break out cable meaning there is no where else to attach another midi device in my case the infinity looper. Also since to make onsong work the beat sync is set to disable or so i was told it needs to be ?

Thanks

Brent

I never tried connected a looper in an OnSong environment, so I can’t be specific. The connection issue could be solved with a Midi Solutions Thru box, which would double the midi port. Whether the resulting doubled port would provide a signal that plays nicely with the Infiniti, I can’t say.

I have OnSong connected with Aeros looper and Midi Solutions Thru box. As Phil_Flood writes. I confirm it works. Before that, I had an Infinity looper connected and it worked too.

Thanks it does work !

Thanks Phil it does work !
