My OnSong setup with BeatBuddy

I know you’re more interested in validating the rest of your MIDI sync chain but I’m surprised to hear about the hiss in your Infinity and guitar signal as I don’t have that problem. Where is your Infinity in your signal chain? I have my Infinity as the last pedal in my chain and it’s quiet. What do you have your Infinity Master Volume set at? Mine’s just a touch shy of 3 o’clock.

Hi Persist,

My signal chain is as follows:

Guitar > TC Helicon Play Acoustic > Infinity Looper > LR Baggs Session DI > Speakers/PA

I actually have to set the volume in the Infinity Looper all the way up because if I lower it I can’t get a decent amount of signal. The only way I can get the same amount of signal is by turning the volume knob all the way up…
I’ve tested the signal without the looper and it is clean, so it definitely is getting the hiss for raising the volume with the knob. I would expect unity at halfway of the knob, but it is not the case.

Gents,
Thanks for all the great info. Wouldn’t the BB be the preferred midi clock source as rule of thumb?

YES, it is…

You may have tried this already but according to p12 of the Infinity user guide, when turning the master volume up all the way, you get 3db of boost; unity is at 3 o’clock. It also says that the unity gain for loops 1 & 2 volume is at 12 o’clock.

Anyhow, if you get the rest of your gear working, you probably won’t need to worry about the Infinity any more.

Well, you just made me rethink the setup all over again! I will try to get my hands on the setup again this weekend and run some tests to see if I can get rid of the hiss. If I am able to I will have to return all the things I bought  but it will ultimately be better and more convenient for me. The only thing I think I won’t be able to return is the Quantiloop.

BUT, if what @Restless Ray says about the MIDI link sync is true, then I would definitely try the wireless set up out, as I wouldn’t have to return the iRig 2 and get the iRig Pro duo. I will have to wait for the Yamaha adapter to arrive and run some tests.

You just need the iRig Pro Duo - it will do MIDI Sync, Start Stop and send any MIDI CC commands from OnSong.

If you have noise in your signal chain, I recommend you read this: https://www.pedalsnake.com/blog/category/the-noise-manual/

For those interested, I did some testing with the PUC+ (wireless Bluetooth MIDI) vs Wired MIDI connection. The video demonstrates the problems with syncing that you’ll run into.

It’s currently uploading as I type this so may be 30 mins or so before you can watch it:

Interesting! It appears to be an issue with the PUC+… Do you have the same problem when using the MIDI Link Sync app? I don’t experience any of the wireless issues you are having using the Yamaha MD-BT01. Are you using the Beatbuddy as the MIDI Clock?

This is my setup:
Guitar > irig 2 > iPad (using GarageBand) > Bose L1

I’m using Onsong to choose my Songs/Programs for Beatbuddy and Quantiloop.
The MIDI output from Beatbuddy goes to the Yamaha MD-BT01…Set Quantiloop to sync with the Yamaha MD-BT01…
Start the MIDI Link Sync app and sync with the Yamaha MD-BT01…Done!!!

It appears complicated, but only takes about 30 seconds to setup… be patient! This terminology completely boggled my mind last month, now I get it…

I used to post alot on the board a while back but once I took Ruairiau’s advice and bought the iRig Pro Duo interface my sync and midi issues went away. Ipad running: Onsong, Biasfx, and a few other effect apps for guitar - all routed properly through the app “AUM - Audio Mixer” to one channel on my iRig Pro Duo then to one channel on powered speaker. Voice routed to 2nd channel on iRig Pro Duo. Then Beatbuddy- to the second channel on my powered speaker. Using 2x morning stars https://www.morningstarfx.com with 3 expression foot pedals to control all my midi parameters on Beat buddy & Quantiloop & Bias FX for my guitar. Excuse my messy garage. Though the rang is still on the board it is coming off soon because Quantiloop is working so well.[ATTACH=full]6915[/ATTACH]

Hello @Restless Ray, I actually tried this setup and it does stay in sync, even at high tempos, but I usually don’t play anything above 140 bpm anyway.

However, I am still having trouble using the start/stop function to have the Quantiloop start to record once the beat starts to play. I will play around a bit more with it once the Blueboard arrives, because right now I can’t get the Quantiloop to start to record on the start of the beat as in the Infinity Looper, for example, to press the main pedal and then press the record button in the Quantiloop, what I would expect is the looper to enter in queue mode while the intro fill is playing and then enter into record mode once the first beat comes in. I can’t still figure out how to do this as @ruairiau shows in his video. I was able to make it start if I prerecorded it and to stop, but not to start to record correctly.

Check your Phrase settings…

Hello,

I already set my phrase settings as you show, but I recently returned my iRig 2 to order the iRig Pro Duo. I will go with the setup that @ruairiau suggested, as I trust more the lightning connection on my iPad than the 1/8 headphone output… just seems more trustworthy to me. I will still keep the Yamaha adapter for other purposes like when I will not use the looper just be able to sync OnSong and BeatBuddy.

I already have everything except for the iRig Duo that will come until next Thursday. I will share my experience once I get everything to work and then I will hopefully be able to sell my Infinity Looper.

As I’m not on every forum every day, feel free to send an email to support@quantiloop.com, although the guys here probably can help you more in getting things working with this setup.

To whom it may concern,
I just purchased the BeatBuddy with the MIDI Sync Breakout Cable and purchased a Yamaha Wireless 5-Pin DIN MIDI Adapter to go along with it. I am hoping to connect it with ONSONG on my iPad and manage a gig. Any suggestions as to how I set up sets with ONSONG and play them without having to bend down everytime to change the song on the BeatBuddy to another loop or track? I have a MAC computer at home that I use for personal use which is updated with the newest operating system. I’m going to claim ignorance when it comes to technology, so it you could explain this all in layman’s terms I would appreciate it! LOL! I appreciate any help and assistance anyone can send my way! Have a great day!!!

I use OnSong with the Yamaha BT-01. But, I also use an iRig Blueboard to scroll up and down in OnSong rather than automating the scrolling. This is an example of a header in OnSong:

{Title: A Million Miles Away}
{Artist: Rory Gallagher}
MIDI: 0.1:0
Key: Dm
Tempo: 75
Time: 4/4

The brackets in the first two lines are optional. The third line tells OnSong where the Song is on the Beat Buddy, so that the Beat Budy can pull it up. The 5th line sets the tempo.

The third line has to be in the format shown. MIDI: MSB.LSB:Song number. MSB is how many times to add 128 to the folder number. In my case its zero, becuase I have less than 128 folders. I’ve been told there is a BB limit of 100, but I have not test that. LSB is the position of your folder on your Beat Buddy minus 1. So, in this case, the song is in the second folder in my Beat Buddy. Song number is the song’s position within that folder, also minus 1. This song, is the first song in my second folder. Again the command is "MIDI: [one space after the colon]MSB[this will be zero].LSB[this is the folder position on the BB minus 1]:song number[song position minus 1]. There is a space after the first colon, no space after the period, and no space after the second colon.

Using OnSong with BB and my BLueBoard, I use this command set:

  1. Make sure Blueboard app is running, and Blueboard is connected.
  2. Beat Buddy Settings, as follows:

Main Pedal>MIDI Settings

 MIDI In>System Real Time>Sync>Enabled
         Start> Enabled
         Stop> Enabled
   MIDI Channel Number > All
   Note On > Disabled
   Control Change> Enable All
   ***MIDI ID> By Order

 MIDI Out
   Output Type>MIDI Merge
   Channel > Channel 5
   Sync>While playing
   Start> Intro
   Stop> Pause and End
   Notes> Disable
   Next Part> Disable
   Time Sig> Enable

Cue Fill Period > 0%

Footswitch> 1st stopped >song back
1st paying >outro fill
2nd stopped > song advance
2nd Playing >pause/unpause

  1. OnSong Settings
    Gear>Editors>Midi>Wrench>Sources>Connect bluetooth, then activate BT01
Gear>Editors>Midi: Program Change 4 on Channel 1 Scroll up
Program Change 5 on Channel 1 Scroll down

    Gear>Editors>Midi>Wrench
    Midi enable on
    Virtual Midi on
    Tempo > ch. 5

Thank you for your reply Phil! How do you know what MSB and LSB number to assign to each song or if I already have songs loaded as pdf files in onsong downloaded from “Ultimate Guitar.com” are they already assigned? I just need to set up a new folder and start loading songs for a gig list and assign them as I go right? Then once set and synced I can use the foot switch to change from one song to the next in the set, correct?

The MSB and LSB are both based on where the folder with the song is located on the Beat Buddy. Nothing else. No, they are not already assigned, because Ultimate Guitar does not know where your songs are on the Beat Buddy. Yes, set up a folder and assign them as you go. But, you won’t use the footswitch to change songs; you’ll use OnSong. OnSong will tell the BB which song to pull up. It does not work vice versa. BB won’t tell OnSong which song to display. You’ll create the set list in OnSong once you have the MIDI numbers assigned to the songs in OnSong.

I’m sorry to ask but I’m new to this where do I find out how to set up the MIDI numbers assigned to songs in OnSong? You are so helpful and I appreciate your assistance! Just got my BeatBuddy and am anxious to get it up and running! I’ve been playing around with it and can hardly contain my excitement! Let’s see if I have this right now, I set up my set list in OnSong (that has been assigned MIDI numbers) and create a folder in BeatBuddy Manager as “Set List” with the same songs listed and this thing should work?

My next question is this…does the set list in Beatbuddy have to have MIDI for each song as well? Thank you for helping me!!!
