My old laptop has reached the end of its functional life and I’m looking to buy a new dedicated work station / suitable laptop using BBMO, BB and Aeros to create custom drum tracks, and for composing/ recording. I was wondering, what type of DAW / laptop set up is very compatible with these devices? I’ve read that some people have systems that have troubles syncing, etc. and I have the chance now to optimize on the front end rather than trouble shoot from the back end. What do y’all use? What would you recommend? I’ve enjoyed using the beat buddy so far, but with the old laptop kicking the bucket and aeros loop on the purchase horizon, I figure I might as well go all in.
Others can correct me if I’m wrong but my impression is that Windows as an operating system works best with Singular Sound apps/programs
Is your laptop Windows or macOS? Are you an iPhone, iPad or an Android user? If you’re an iOS or iPad user and your laptop is Windows, your experience with iOS will help you if you decide to go the Mac route. Only thing I would suggest is that your laptop include 16Gb of RAM, an SSD and a built-in slot reader for SD cards.
You will probably have less of a learning curve sticking with the same type of operating system (OS) of your current laptop. Why? You probably don’t want to have to learn a new OS and particularly if you want to start using a DAW as well (a steep enough learning curve on its own).
Since the BBMO is now a web-based app, all things are probably about the same for working up content for the BeatBuddy (BB) with either OS. With the BBMO there no reports of issues synchronizing from either platform.
As far as a DAW goes, I’m gonna show my bias towards the macOS and Logic Pro X (expensive but you can download a trial version for 90 days). You could also try GarageBand, which is free from Apple for the Mac and considered as a light version of Logic Pro X.
For Windows, you can try Reaper for free and it’s much less expensive than Logic Pro X. There are other free DAWs out there though and you’ll probably just have to sort thru them that has the features and ease-of-use that best works for you.
Let us know what you end up getting.
I have heard that as well. There are so many of them with different features, though, I don’t how much storage, chip type/speed, etc. all those particulars that would help to optimise functionality for singular sound peripherals.
Thank you. I have both a windows laptop (dead) and a mac book pro (8 years old), so I am familiar enough with both systems to not have big learning curve on that end.
My memory of posts here is definitely pre-online BB manager on line, so that is good to hear.
This new unit will be dedicated for music only since my job provides me with a laptop.
I need to do a bit more research before buying and I will certainly post here when I figure out the best one for me. Thanks for the feed back.
Are you going to apply effects on the recordings? Or otherwise manipulate the sound? If yes then I believe that will be the computationally heaviest thing
The other heavy might be if you have many tracks in a DAW project
So you might want to consider buying more powerful CPU/GPU (I don’t know which is more important )
One other thing is the monitoring of the recording since depending the buffer size the delay might be smaller or larger But I guess this depends a lot on the recording equipment too Someone with more experience in recording could comment this better
Yes i will be manipulating and processing the sound. That is the part I am working on now, trying to find out what system will work optimally without requiring a huge cash outlay. There are so many computer systems out there. It does appear I can get a decently high rated system with 1tb of storage and 16 GB of RAM for about $1700.00, which is good for me. I just have to sort thru the brands to read the +/- parts, as all of them sacrifice some things for other things.
Maybe these reviews will give you some ideas: Best laptop for music production 2024: Ranked and rated | MusicRadar
I’m on Windows and use a combination of Reaper and Audacity. Both free though I have now paid for the former (only fair as use it so much). Can’t get on with online BBM so still use old version (familiarity?). I create unique drumsets for each song (mostly originals).
Why are you unable to do the online version?
Thank you! The search services have a completely different set of laptops than those.
I can, but it’s just something new to learn and I can’t be arsed.
