The best feature of beat buddy is that it will cycle through different samples within the same velocity, and allow multiple velocities. This creates an X Y matrix of possibility rather than just an X axis of possibility. This creates a realism that is better than other drum machine options.

Does singular sound have a patent on that idea, or is it preceded elsewhere? Is there any other software/hardware that can do this? what is it called?

Its called “round robin” sample selection. Its present in some better software packages, like Kontakt and Steven Slate drums. I believe Apple’s Logic uses it on their built-in drum kits, as there are instructions available on constructing kits that will use the process.
