Using BeatBuddy and Aeros with a mixer

I’ve been a BeatBuddy and Aeros user/fan for several years. I love how the BB can midi control the Aeros to trigger parts, change tempo, etc.

I’ve been trying to figure out the optimal set up with my mixer (a Mackie ProFX12) and haven’t found it yet, so I’m posting here in hope that someone can enlighten me.

Ideally, I’d like to record mixer channels (keyboards, mics, etc.) on the Aeros while keeping the BB tracks “live” (unrecorded) so that I have the flexibility to use the BB as a trigger for the Aeros and/or change drum track/kits. I’d like to hear the BB track over the PA while I record to the Aeros. However, I can’t figure out how to do that unless I separate the BB or Aeros signals from the mix using headphones, which works but is not great. I can also plug keyboards and mics directly into the Aeros and not have it record off the mixer, but that is annoying compared with just using the mixer as the primary input.

Is there some clever way to set up a BB + Aeros + mixer using monitor or return channels, or some other path? Many thanks for any ideas!

Hi @GManG

A simple solution would be to feed the Aeros inputs from your Mackie’s Sub 1+2 Outs.

Return signal from Aeros goes into a normal pair of channels NOT sent to Sub 1+2.

This way anything playing through the mixer can be sent to the Aeros and recorded, just by routing to Sub 1+2. Flexible and simple !

Monitoring will remain as normal, you can listen to the BB but not record it if its not routed to the Sub out.

Oh, and remember the Thru signal can be muted if you don’t want to hear it coming from the Aeros - until you play the loop.

Thanks for the response and suggestion, @Nonyx.

Unfortunately, my Mackie mixer doesn’t have Sub 1+2 outs. It has stereo Main out, mono Monitor out, and mono FX out. I could use either the Monitor or FX channels as the input for the Aero, but would lose the stereo output of my keyboards. I suspect that may be the best option for my particular set up. I guess I can run a keyboard directly into the Aero to record a track if the stereo effect (e.g. panning delay) is important to a patch.

Ah! Sorry I didn’t know the sends were Mono … Headphone Output any good instead ? Not an ideal solution, I know.

Or the Control Room Outputs ? That may be a stereo option.

I recommend the following setup:

Audio:
Instruments → Mackie ProFX12 → Aeros IN
Aeros OUT → BeatBuddy IN
BeatBuddy OUT → full-range speakers or mixer.

You can use the BeatBuddy’s headphone output for monitoring.

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask!

I was thinking that the beat buddy has a headphone jack out.
I don’t know if the Mackie is the same as the Zoom L 12 mixer. On the L12 you can use any of the monitor out’s A,B,C,D as auxiliary sends.

My proFX12 v3 has a sub feature that i route “loopable” devices through to the Aeros.
I can go into details if you’d like. let me know. I also use 2 channels for vocals on an a/b switch
for looped and non looped vocals (or loop enablement I suppose). My beatbuddy is (obviously?) not routed through the sub (unloopable).
