Yea you pretty much nailed it. The Quantiloop is controlled by the OnSong through the BeatBuddy. It is midi on Channel 1 and my BeatBuddy uses channel 11. When I switch a song on my BeatBuddy it also tells the Quantiloop what patch I need. No different I guess then any looper with midi, connected to the BeatBuddy. The Irig is connected to the IPAD with the Quantilooop on it. And of course the OnSong Ipad is connected to the Puc+ which in turn is connected to the BeatBuddy. through the MIDI cable. The Quantiloop use MSB 127. Not Zero. As you probbally already know the LSB is what ever number the patch is on the Quantilooop. The BeatBuddy also Starts/Stops and sets the tempo for the Quantiloop. Lets not forget that The BlueBoard foot pedal is also connected to the Ipad with the QuantiLoop through BlueTooth for foot control of my patches. I will take some Video and show you what it looks like.
Thanks. I’d really appreciate something visual.
We’re still looking forward to your video, Larry
Have not forgot, will get that done, this week if all goes well.
@Larry,
I submitted a feature request to Stephan (Quantiloop developer) to support Split Screen (see here). OnSong already supports split screen, so ideally you can have that take up most of the screen and a minified Quantiloop take up a smaller area to the right of the screen. Stephan said he’d look into it for a future update.
So fingers crossed, you won’t need 2 iPads for much longer (unless you prefer that setup).
@Everyone
As an alternative to pre-recorded bass loops, I use a Moore Tender Octaver and just jam some bass lines - it’s probably the best octaver I’ve ever used and really cheap. I might post up a video soon and share how I do it.
That would be a great feature, I use two Ipads so i can see what is going on with the looper, that would allow me to go back to one iPAD, which I would of thought of it, great idea.
That’s a great idea! I plan on using my iPhone for Onsong and my iPad for Quantiloop for now…but, I have yet to introduce the iPhone into the equation yet.
I would love to see Sticky Notes or some way of labeling prerecorded tracks in Quantiloop.
The iRig Blueboard just arrived! It worked perfectly from the second I turned it on…
You can have Onsong on the split screen, along with the Sticky Notes…

Yeah you can do this with OnSong too. But that’s not ‘really’ split screen, it’s just an overlay - the overlay has focus and if you tap on Quantiloop, the overlay disappears. Open Apple Notes and Calendar; this works in split screen. You get something similar but there’s a little white bar that you can grab to adjust the split. Both apps are in focus and can be used without the other going away.
Also, your iRig Blueboard should not have worked out of the box; that’s a little surprising. I had to change it to MIDI mode by turning it off, holding down C, then turning it back on (requires a firmware update too). I wonder if you’re using the standard mode which simply sends program change commands.
And the BlueBoard might not have the latest firmware.
Like the instructions state and many of the videos I watched, I held the C pad in when powering it up…I didn’t update any firmware…it’s brand new, so maybe it has the latest firmware…anyway, it’s pretty cool and works just like touching the pads on the iPad screen. I didn’t gig with it tonight, but it sure was tempting.
Here’s a quick video of my current looping setup. I bought a new floorboard on ebay (kinda hard to see with the lighting, had difficulty trying to get the screen of the Beat Buddy to show semi-clear).
I have 2 separate power supplies; the Beat Buddy can get a little noisy if you daisy chain power (so can most pedals). I’ve also wired 6v regulator (LM7806) in the battery compartment of the IRig Blue board so I could run it off the 9v power; got sick of changing batteries. Lastly, I’m using the amazing Mooer Tender Octaver to let me put down some bass loops.
When I select a song, OnSong is sending the Tempo to the Beat Buddy and changing the drum beat (patch). The Beat Buddy is the MIDI clock source and Quantiloop is synced to that clock.
Very cool video and a great demonstration… thanks for sharing! I’d like to learn more about your 6v regulator.
Where your Quantiloop says “dub mode”, mine says “arm mode”. I wonder if it works the same?
I’m using the beta version of Quantiloop. Arm mode is has been changed to dub mode; when it’s off, the pedals simply play and stop tracks, you can’t overdub. Handy if you set up your tracks then don’t want to accidently erase them.
What do you want to know about the regulator? It’s just a simple circuit using an LM7806 regulator. Wire pin 1 and 2 to female power plug. Wire pin 2 and 3 to the battery terminals. Test with multimeter.
The regulator mod sounds simple enough and inexpensive…thanks.
Keep an eye on the heat. You may need a heat sink and capacitor across the input. Read the spec sheet and do at your own risk!!
Larry,
Is it possible to do this with just ONE iPad?
Hi guys. I just got into this BeatBuddy and looping thing. I pretty much followed the device design that ruairiau has posted and things work pretty good (i.e., BeatBuddy, iRig Pro-Duo, QuantiLoop, and iRig Blueboard). Thanks for your postings ruairriau. I also use the iRig Powerbridge for keeping my iPad charged. I don’t use OnSong as yet.
As I don’t see a QuantiLoop forum anywhere, I was hoping maybe to get some answers in this thread:
-
QuantiLoop sees the Blueboard on startup, but I need to manually ‘Connect’ to it. Is there a setup parameter to allow auto-connect?
-
I use BeatBuddy as the MIDI Master for Tempo and Start/Stop of QuantiLoop. Can the reverse also be setup where Start/Stop of Quantiloop (either by on-screen button press or from the Blueboard) sends the Start/Stop to Beatbuddy? I wish to have both ways work so I have multiple ways to run. If so, what settings in BeatBuddy and QuantiLoop are required?
Thanks.
Hey Ken,
You don’t need the Powerbridge. The newer iPad Camera Connection Kits have a USB port and a lightning port - so you can charge whilst using a USB device.
As for your questions
- Nope. But good idea - not sure if it’s technically possible though.
- Yeah you can do it both ways. Disable the clock sending on the beatbuddy in the settings under Main Pedal > MIDI Settings > MIDI-OUT > Sync : change this to disable. Then, in Quantiloop, click the MIDI OUT icon down the bottom of the screen and select the iRig Pro DUO. Then click the RHYTHM button to toggle the MIDI Clock.
